Midshires Training Institute - Counselling Courses and Training

The Training Programme

A flexible approach to Psychotherapy and Pastoral Counselling Training

The programme consists of a foundation year followed by four one-year courses. Each year comprises a minimum of 120 hours, normally made up of 10 weekends between September / October and the following July. Satisfactory completion of each course allows access to the next level.

The courses are designed both to be complete in themselves and to build towards qualification as a Certified Transactional Analyst, depending upon individual requirements. Our flexible approach allows for some individual variations in the way your training needs are met.

Programme Structure:

10 weekends per year. 12 hours per weekend. Course awards.

YEAR 1: Foundation Year - taught as a single-level group.

Leading to: Foundation Certificate in TA Psychotherapy Skills.

YEAR 2 leads to either of:
Adv. Cert. in TA Psychotherapy Skills
Adv. Cert in Psychotherapy Skills and Pastoral Counselling

YEAR 3:is taught as a combination of specified workshops and student-centred learning, and
leads to either of:
Diploma in TA Psychotherapy Skills
Diploma in Psychotherapy Skills and Pastoral Counselling

YEAR 4: Taught as Year 3, this group also provides opportunities to accrue training hours for anyone either training in TA elsewhere, or wanting to do CPD.

Year 4 leads to:
Advanced Diploma in TA psychotherapy skills.

From this year, students may continue on to do CTA exam preparation if they wish.

Each year provides between 120 and 140 hours of theory and skills training. These will count either towards a TA qualification, or towards accreditation by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

How much does the course cost?

The course fees are currently £1200 per year. An initial deposit of £200 is required for enrolment and the balance can be paid by a variety of methods, in full before the start of the course, or by monthly standing order. The fees are reviewed annually and will normally rise in line with inflation.

For those intending to use this course to acquire a professional qualification please note that from Year 2 onwards there will be additional costs for both supervision and personal therapy. Students are required to make arrangements directly with their chosen therapist and supervisor.

The United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy requires that trainees wishing to qualify as Transactional Analysts require a minimum of 40 hours therapy a year over four years. The amount of supervision required varies between accrediting bodies, but you should expect to need a minimum of 1.5 hours per month.

Costs for this will vary depending on the practitioner; therapy between £25 and £50 per session and supervision between £40 and £60 per session.

Entry Requirements

All prospective students will be interviewed by one of the course directors. We do not require a prior degree or professional qualification but part of the entry requirement will be a written piece of work giving your reasons for wanting to do the course.

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) is available; please contact the administrator for information.

Embedded in the training is the opportunity to reflect on how your personal philosophy or spiritual perspective is supported and challenged by the theory and philosophy of Transactional Analysis. Each training day will be taught by one of the four trainers, and the last session will split into dedicated groups to encourage deeper reflection.
